How to Tell When It’s Time to Repair vs. Replace Warehouse Storage Racks

Whether you’re running a small distribution center or a heavy manufacturing warehouse, it’s a given that at some point the storage racks in your space will require repair or replacement. Daily use, work accidents, and normal wear and tear can weaken the components of your racks, which can lead to failure and potentially hazardous conditions.

Additionally, sometimes repairs can end up costing you more than rack replacements. When you suspect your warehouse racks may be failing, it’s important to conduct thorough inspections to gauge the extent of the damage and pinpoint specific conditions that warrant either replacements or thorough repairs.

Repairable Rack Conditions

In many cases, upright columns can be repaired, as long as the damage is minimal and the components aren’t rusted or decaying. Additionally, it’s generally more cost-effective to repair upright columns. When using a bolted or welded repair kit, column repairs typically run below $300, while new columns can cost upwards of $350.

Additionally, any upright beam that’s been hit head-on or side-on with cross-aisle deviation less than 3/16″ and down-aisle deviation less than 1/4″ can usually be repaired, but it’s important to assess the damage for issues such as rusting or broken hardware.

Conditions That Indicate Rack Replacement

While columns with minimal damage can often be repaired, columns that are twisted, punctured, or missing bracing should generally be replaced. Additional matters that require replacement include updated regulation requirements, pallets that need complex repairs that cost more than replacements, and outdated equipment.

Commercial shelving that has extensive damage, such as severe rusting, cracks, or deep punctures should always be replaced. Additionally, deflecting beams and beams with damaged safety locks require replacement in most cases.
